Saving Rhodes’ medieval jewel

The Culture Ministry has launched a restoration project for the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Technical University of Crete is conducting structural assessments, material analysis, and restoration proposals.

The project aims to address damage from humidity, earthquakes, and aging materials while improving visitor accessibility and infrastructure, including fire safety and lighting. The palace, historically used as an administrative centre, a prison, and later an Italian governor’s residence, houses permanent exhibitions on Rhodes’ history.

Planned upgrades include digital tours and revamped visitor services. The restoration seeks to preserve the landmark’s historical integrity while modernizing facilities for sustainable cultural tourism.
