Hellenistic-era statue found inside garbage bag in Thessaloniki

A Hellenistic-era statue has been discovered near a trash container in Thessaloniki, northern Greece. A 33-year-old man reported finding the statue inside a black garbage bag on Saturday and immediately alerted the authorities.

An archaeologist from the Ephorate of Antiquities of Thessaloniki examined the artifact and confirmed its authenticity. The statue was then confiscated by officers from the Office for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, who have launched an investigation into the matter.

The artifact will undergo laboratory analysis before being transferred to the local ephorate for safekeeping and further evaluation.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the discovery.
