Geraldton, WA: The Feast Day of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel

With the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, the faithful of the Archdiocesan District of Perth celebrated the Feast Day of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel in the homonymous Greek Orthodox Church in Geraldton on Saturday and Sunday the 4th and 5th of November, 2023.

The celebrations commenced with the Hierarchical Vespers Service Presided by His Grace Bishop Elpidios of Kyanea, Archiepiscopal Vicar of the Archdiocesan District of Perth. In his sermon, His Grace spoke about the appearances of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel in both the Old and New Testaments, respectively.

The following day, His Grace Bishop Elpidios officiated at the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy which concluded with the procession of the holy icon outside the church. This was then followed by a festive luncheon in which various families and associations pledged a total of $11,000 toward the purchasing of five new air conditioners for the Greek Orthodox Church in Geraldton. The Pledge Fundraising was led by His Grace Bishop Elpidios and assisted by Father Terry Gerovasilis.

This year, many young families had travelled to Geraldton from Perth for the church celebrations including the Consul of Greece in Perth, Mrs. Georgia Karasiotou, who also attended with her entire family.

It is also noted that Geraldton is a coastal city in the Mid-West region of WA, 424 Km North of Perth and has a population of approximately 38,000. It is well known for its amazing beaches and foreshore as well as the amazing Saint Frances Xavier Cathedral.

The Greek Orthodox Church of the Archangels in Geraldton was consecrated on the 9th of May 1965 by His Eminence the Late Archbishop Ezekiel Tsoukalas, of blessed memory.
