Bishop Kyriakos of Sozopolis attends the “Oakleigh Glendi” in Melbourne

The attendance of people at this year’s Greek festival organised by the Parish – Community of Saints Anargiri in the suburb of Oakleigh in Melbourne was quite impressive. The two-day “Oakleigh Glendi” was the culmination of the celebrations for the Patron Saints of the Parish-Community, Saints Cosmas and Damian.

The liturgical services were presided over by His Grace Bishop Kyriakos of Sozopolis, Archiepiscopal Vicar of Melbourne, who in his greeting at the opening of the Greek festival, conveyed the festive wishes and paternal blessings of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia and in his message he emphasised, among other things, the following:

“The Parish-Community of Saints Anargiri is undoubtedly a beacon of light that not only protects the values of our Christian Orthodox faith, but also preserves and promotes our ideals, our Greek identity, language and culture. It is my sincere prayer that the Parish-Community of Oakleigh will continue to shine as an example of Orthodox faith and life in Christ and as an authentic bearer and witness of Greek culture in our Greek-Australian society.”

His Grace Bishop Kyriakos was joined by Father Stavros Kakavas, while also present at the Greek Festival were, among others, the Consul General of Greece in Melbourne, Mr. Emmanuel Kakavelakis, the State Minister for Sports, Mr. Steve Dimopoulos MP, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier of Victoria, Mr. Nick Staikos MP, the Leader of the Opposition in the State Parliament of Victoria, Mr. John Pesutto, the shadow Minister for Energy, Affordability and Security in Victoria, The Hon. David Davis MLC,  the Municipal Councillor Mr. Theodoros Zografou and the President of the Greek Community of Melbourne, Mr. Bill Papastergiadis.
