Waverley Anzacs of Greece Memorial unveiled

The inclement autumn weather on Sunday 30 May did not deter Very Rev. Archimandrite Father Prohoros, Fr Eirenaeus, Consul-General Christos , Waverly Mayor Paula Masselos and Commodore John Stavridis RAN from leading the unveiling ceremony of a plaque marking the 80th anniversary of the Second Anzac Corps and the Greek Campaign.

President of the NSW Jewish Ex-Servicemens’ and Womens’ Association Mr Roger Selby added a very personal dimension to the ceremony, reading extracts from his father’s memoir. The late Lieutenant Colonel Dr Tom Selby was the RMO of 2/1 Bn AIF of the Second Anzac Corps in Hellas.

Rabbi Dovid Slovin, New Zealand-born Father Rev Bernard Thomas OFM PP of the Mary Immaculate Roman Catholic Church Waverley, the Consul-General of the Russian Federation, descendants of Second Generation Anzacs who fought against the Nazis in 1941, the Joint Committee for the Commemoration of the Greek Campaign, AHEPA NSW INC and other Hellenic community representatives also participated.

This plaque was unveiled in 2021 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Crete and the Greek Campaign and to honour the Waverley Anzacs buried in Greece:

Unveiled by the Mayor of Waverley,

30th May 2021

In the words of Joint Committee Secretary Nick Andriotakis, it was very moving to hear Mayor Paula Masselos provide some details of the lives of the eight Waverley Anzacs of Greece commemorated on this plaque, some of whom lived within walking distance of the memorial which now bears their names.
