Holy Diocese of Chora: The Feast Day of the Church of Saint George in Thornbury

With particular splendour and the presence of a large number of believers, the memory of Saint George the Great Martyr and Trophy-bearer was celebrated at the Church of Saint George of the Greek Community of Melbourne, in the Thornbury area.
The Holy Services were presided over by His Grace Bishop Evmenios of Chora, representing His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, whose paternal wishes and blessings he conveyed to the congregation.
On the eve of the feast, a Festive Hierarchical Vespers with Artoklasia was celebrated, while on the day of the feast, the Matins Service and the Divine Liturgy were celebrated with the participation of the priests of the district.

In the sermon, His Grace emphasised that Saint George did not just live for Christ – he lived the Resurrection. This gave him the fearless faith and the strength to bear witness with courage, without hesitation and fear. “Saint George had already risen in Christ before he even offered his body to martyrdom,” he said characteristically. He emphasised that the Resurrection is not just an event, but a way of life that transforms the human person and makes them invincible in the face of every trial.
The celebration was honoured with the presence of the President of the Greek Community of Melbourne, Mr. Bill Papastergiadis, and the Federal Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister for Health and Aged Care, Mr. Ged Kearney.
