Greek Defence Minister: “Saint George connects pillars of Greek Identity – Homeland and Orthodoxy”

On the occasion of the Feast Day of Saint George the Great Martyr and Trophy-Bearer, Greece’s Minister of National Defence, Mr. Nikos Dendias, shared a message on social media highlighting the significance of the Saint for modern Hellenism.

“Warm wishes on today’s great feast of Saint George the Trophy-Bearer. His memory links two fundamental and dominant pillars of contemporary Hellenism: the Homeland and Orthodoxy,” the minister posted on platform X (formerly Twitter).

He went on to note the importance of the Saint’s symbolism in the Greek Armed Forces, stating, “His image adorns our war flags.”

Saint George is widely revered in Greece as a patron Saint of the military, and his icon is frequently found in military camps and churches across the country. His legacy as a defender of faith and justice continues to resonate deeply within the Greek national and religious consciousness.
