Ancient sculpture workshop on Paros reveals new rooms and artifacts

The archaeological excavation carried out by the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades at the site of the ancient sculpture workshop in the Floga area of Parikia, Paros, has concluded for this season, the Ministry of Culture has announced.

This year’s campaign brought to light additional rooms of the building complex, with walls preserved to an impressive height.

Among the most noteworthy finds are unfinished marble sculptures, primarily depictions of Aphrodite, terracotta heads of female figures, clay molds and stamps as well as a large number of ceramic fragments.

According to the Ministry of Culture, the site was first excavated in the mid-1980s, when three structures were uncovered. The presence of marble debris in various areas of the site, along with a significant number of unfinished marble sculptures, provided the first indications that a sculpture workshop was operating at Floga during the Hellenistic period.

Archaeological research at the site resumed in 2008, and since 2013, the excavation has been systematic.
