Basilica B in ancient Philippi partially restored

The ancient city of Philippi’s Basilica B, one of early Christianity’s most significant monuments, has been partially restored, authorities have announced.

The western section of the basilica in the ancient city founded by King Philip II in 356 BC and visited by the Apostle Paul in AD 51 now reflects its original grandeur following meticulous work by the Culture Ministry.

Efforts focused on stabilising the structure and restoring its western narthex entrance. New materials, including marble from local quarries, were integrated to preserve authenticity. Archaeologist Stathis Iliadis highlighted the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic during the project.

Visitors will soon experience the revitalised site and its ancient latrines, showcasing its unique early Byzantine heritage.
