Monemvasia: Cable car project divides historic castle town

Residents and experts are voicing strong opposition to a planned €6.8 million cable car in the medieval town of Monemvasia in southern Greece, likening it to a cable car up to the Acropolis – an intrusive and inappropriate addition. Organised by the Friends of Monemvasia Association, a public discussion in Athens revealed concerns about overtourism and harm to the site’s unique character.
Critics, including local groups and architectural experts, argue the project prioritises tourism revenue over heritage. Niki Vaitsou, president of the association, dismissed accessibility claims as a pretext, citing alternative solutions.
The environmental and operational costs – estimated at €50,000 annually – also drew criticism, given existing local issues such as insufficient water supply, poor sewage infrastructure, and slippery cobbled streets.
The project faces legal challenges, with opponents filing an appeal to the Council of State and seeking protection under Europa Nostra’s endangered heritage program. Opponents urge re-evaluation, fearing irreversible damage to Monemvasia’s historic integrity.
