Adelaide: Commemorative Event for the 100th anniversary of the Asia Minor Catastrophe
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Asia Minor Catastrophe, the greatest calamity of Romiosini after the Fall of Constantinople.
The Archdiocesan District of Adelaide, with the initiative and blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, is organising various events throughout the year to honour the struggles and sacrifices of our forefathers, and to keep alive the historical memory of the tragic events, as well as to cultivate in the souls of our younger generations their self-awareness as members of the blessed Romiosini.
With this in mind, a commemorative event was held on Sunday evening, July 10, 2022, at the Parish-Community of Prophet Elias Norwood, on the theme “Asia Minor 1919-1922, triumph and tragedy”.
The event included an array of speeches, stories, poems and songs from and about Asia Minor, as well as a photo exhibition that re-lived the most tragic historical page of Asia Minor’s Romiosini. The talented people who presented the event managed, with their passion and love for our history, to bring the tragic events of the past to life and thus, to instil in our hearts the sense of duty that we all ought to have to embrace the soul of our blessed Romiosini. To preserve our historical memory and to cultivate the faith, the virtues and the holiness that were deeply rooted in the hearts of our brothers and sisters who suffered in Asia Minor.
This honourable commemorative event ended with His Grace Bishop Silouan of Sinope acknowledging the contributors for their exceptional presentation, and most importantly conveying to all present the heartfelt prayers, blessings and appreciations of our Father and Shepherd, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia.
