Two men die in floodwaters on Lemnos island; Storm warning issued for Attica

A 57-year-old farmer died Saturday after being swept away by floodwaters in the Fteri area of Lemnos island. Firefighters recovered his body as severe weather battered the island.

Authorities said the man was using a tractor to free his car from mud when rushing water overtook him.

Another man, 70, was found dead in his flooded home shortly afterward. Local news agencies reported that it remains unclear whether his death resulted from a fall or natural causes.

A 112 evacuation alert was issued to residents of the Kontia community on Lemnos after a nearby dam overflowed.

Lemnos Mayor Eleonora Georga reported widespread damage, including flooded homes in the island’s capital, Myrina, and unsafe drinking water. Roads and electricity infrastructure were also impacted. Emergency crews have been pumping water from affected areas.

Residents of Attica received an emergency alert Saturday evening warning of Storm Bora, which is expected to bring strong storms late Saturday night through Sunday morning. A similar alert was issued for Rhodes island and earlier for Central Macedonia and Thessaly.

Storm Bora, driven by a low-pressure system over the Ionian Sea, is bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms and gale-force winds across Greece, with severe conditions expected to persist until Sunday afternoon.

In its updated bulletin on Saturday, Greece’s National Meteorological Service (EMY) said western Macedonia and Thessaly will be the regions most affected.
