The inauguration of the newly renovated Church of the Holy Trinity in Sydney, on 2 June 2024

On Sunday, 2 June 2024 (from 7:30am), His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia will conduct the inauguration of the newly renovated Church of the Holy Trinity in the suburb of Surry Hills in Sydney.

The historic Greek Orthodox Church, which is the oldest in Australia and in the whole southern hemisphere, has undergone necessary restoration work in recent years.

It is recalled that Church of the Holy Trinity was founded on 29 May 1898 and its reconstruction was completed in the following year, 1899. In 2010 it was included in the list of heritage listed monuments, by the State of New South Wales.

In June 2020, on the feast day of the Holy Spirit and about a year after his arrival in Australia, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia visited and officiated at the Church of the Holy Trinity. It was the first visit by an Archbishop of Australia to the historic Greek Orthodox Church, which belongs to the Greek Orthodox Community of New South Wales, after about half a century.
