The Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Alexandria convenes

On Wednesday, 14 February 2024, the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, presided by His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa, met in Cairo.

Specifically, on Wednesday, 14 February 2024, the Hierarchs of the Patriarchate of Alexandria will begin to gather in the Egyptian capital.

On Thursday, 15 February, the first day of the meeting will begin, during which, after the initial greetings and responses, the report of His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch Theodore of Alexandria and All Africa will be presented. The first day will conclude with the election of the Hierarchs and the formal announcement of the election (Mega Minima) by the elected Hierarchs.

The second day, Friday, 16 February, will focus on the ongoing non-canonical intrusion of the Russian Church in Africa, followed by a discussion of the issue.

There will be a presentation by His Eminence Metropolitan Seraphim of Zimbabwe on the topic: “Preserving the Unity of the Local Churches under the Patriarchate of Alexandria in Africa (practical-pastoral approach to the issue)”. The presentation will be followed by a discussion.

The proceedings of the Holy Synod will conclude with a festive celebration on Saturday, 17 February, the day on which the Church commemorates the memory of St. Theodore the Tyro and Patriarch Theodore of Alexandria, and All Africa celebrates his name day. A Patriarchal and Synodal Divine Liturgy will be held at the Patriarchal Church of St. Nicholas within the Patriarchate of Cairo. This will be followed by the unveiling of the marble bust of Patriarch Meletios Metaxakis.
