The Greek Community of Port Pirie Celebrates 98 Years of Establishment

On Saturday 16 July, the Greek Orthodox Community of Port Pirie celebrated 98 years of establishment and is the oldest Greek Community in South Australia.

Several community members received acknowledgement awards including Ray Thompson, Tony Hadgie and Pat Coomblas for their services to the community over many years.

As is tradition, at each annual birthday celebration, someone donates a replica cake of the church of St George which is always purchased by someone via auction, who then distributes the slices to all in attendance. The community wishes to thank both Rob and Pauline Williams for baking and donating the beautiful cake but also, Vicky Kotsoglous, a pioneer and long-standing committee member of the community who purchased it.

The Greek Community of Port Pirie has dwindled over the years; however, the people of the parish still hold their traditions, customs and faith close to their heart. Over the years, St George and the Port Pirie community have played a pivotal role in promoting and protecting Greek Orthodoxy in South Australia.
