The Feast Day of the Church of Saint Nectarios, Burwood, Sydney

The memory of Saint Nectarios, Bishop of Pentapolis, was celebrated with splendour in the Church of Saint Nectarios in the suburb of Burwood, Sydney. As every year, a multitude of faithful flocked to the celebratory Parish-Community of Burwood to venerate the holy icon and the holy relics of its patron Saint Nectarios.

With the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, the feast day services were presided over by His Grace Bishop Iakovos of Miletoupolis. His Grace Bishop Iakovos officiated at the Great Vespers on the eve of the feast day and presided over the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy on the main day of the feast, joined by clergy from the city of Sydney. On both days, His Grace preached the holy sermon, referring to the life and virtues of the Saint of patience and humility.

Specifically, at the end of Vespers, His Grace Bishop Iakovos spoke to the faithful about the love, patience and forgiveness of Saint Nectarios, while quoting excerpts from His work entitled “Christology”, in which the Saint had declared that his heart’s desire was to support the faith of other Christians, encouraging the spirit of repentance. This included participation in the Sacrament of Confession, which renews and revitalises humankind by removing sin, as His Grace explained.

On the main day of the feast, His Grace Bishop Iakovos described before the congregation how Saint Nectarios was an embodiment of Christ’s Blessings, since he possessed all the virtues described by the Lord, which attract God’s grace.

The feast day events of the Parish – Community of Saint Nectarios, Burwood, will conclude this Sunday, 12 November 2023, when His Eminence Metropolitan Seraphim of Sevasteia will preside over the Matins and Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, and the annual event, the “Greek Street Fair” will be held in the streets that surround the Holy Church. The “Greek Street Fair” is organised with the cooperation and sponsorship of the Council of Burwood, while this year’s program promises to be richer than ever, including, among other things, Greek food, dancing, and a highly festive atmosphere.
