Small landslide at Navagio beach indicative of the dangers in the area, professor Lekkas explains

Authorities on the island of Zakynthos have closed Navagio Beach, a popular tourist destination that is famous for its signature shipwreck, after the 5.4-Richter earthquake earlier on Thursday caused large rocks from the surrounding cliffs to come loose and fall into the bay.

The rocks fell into the sea, fortunately without damaging boats sailing nearby.  The Zakynthos coast guard has forbidden visitors from alighting on the beach by boat and also blocked access by road, for fear of more rockfalls.

The president of the Anti-Seismic Planning and Protection Organisation, professor of Geology Efthymios Lekkas, said to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency on Thursday that the 5.3 Richter earthquake recorded off Kefalonia caused a small landslide, which is indicative of the dangers that exist at Navagio beach on Zakynthos.

Lekkas also said that the authorities in the region must ensure that protective measures, such as the three protection zones on the beach, are strictly followed and advise tourists to be cautious when visiting the beach.
