During her visit to Alexandria, Egypt, to inaugurate the renovated Cavafy House, at the invitation of the Onassis Foundation President Mr. Antonis Papadimitriou, President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou took the opportunity to engage with the Greek community of Alexandria.

Welcomed by Mr. Andreas Vafiadis, President of the Greek community of Alexandria, and Mr. Christos Kavalis, President of the Greek community of Cairo, Mrs. Sakellaropoulou listened to the concerns of the community members.

She commended their resilience in preserving and promoting Greek culture in Egypt despite challenges, affirming their significance within the Greek diaspora. Assuring continued support from the Greek State, she emphasised solidarity with their endeavours.

Subsequently, President Sakellaropoulou explored the historic Greek neighbourhood of Shatby, visiting landmarks such as the Averofian Gymnasium, the Library of the Greek community, and the “Manna” nursing home.

Paying homage to the rich Greek heritage in Alexandria, she concluded her visit at the Greek Orthodox cemetery. There, she honoured poet Konstantinos Cavafy and other prominent Alexandrian figures, laying a wreath at the memorial commemorating Greek air force fighters who lost their lives in the Middle East during World War II.
