President of Montenegro visits Holy Archdiocese of Cyprus

The President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović, concluded his official visit to Cyprus today by visiting the Holy Archdiocese of Cyprus. Accompanied by his wife and entourage, President Milatović toured the historic Cathedral of St. John, where he venerated the icons and learned about the Church’s rich history. The President was then warmly welcomed by His Beatitude Archbishop George of Cyprus.

In his remarks following their meeting and the exchange of gifts, Archbishop George highlighted the significance of the visit. “As Head of the Orthodox State, in which the Church has played and continues to play a crucial role in maintaining our national and religious identity, it was fitting for the President of Montenegro to visit us,” he said.

The Archbishop described their conversation as very engaging. “We had a very interesting discussion about issues concerning Orthodoxy in general, as well as about our national matters and Montenegro’s efforts to join the EU. It was a very fruitful discussion,” he added.

When asked about the potential for further cooperation between the Churches of Cyprus and Montenegro, the Archbishop noted their shared faith. “The Church of Montenegro is not yet autocephalous. I believe that the bond that exists among all Orthodox Churches applies to us as well. When, with God’s help, they achieve autocephaly, our relations will develop further. In any case, we share a common faith,” he concluded.
