Pilgrims flock to the historic Patriarchal Monastery of Saint George in Cairo for Patronal Feast Day

In the heart of historic Cairo, the Holy Patriarchal Monastery of Saint George once again opened its gates to welcome pilgrims of the Orthodox faith. Set against the backdrop of ancient Babylon in Egypt, the monastery stands as a living monument to Orthodoxy and to the enduring presence of the Greek Orthodox community in Egypt through the centuries.

On Thursday evening, 24 April 2025, the Monastery, beautifully adorned with colorful and fragrant flowers, welcomed the faithful who gathered early to participate in the Great Festal Vespers. His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa presided over the Vespers with reverence, assisted by His Eminence Metropolitan Nikodimos of Memphis and Patriarchal Vicar of Cairo, and His Grace Bishop Stephanos of Hippo.

One of the most moving moments was the procession of the Holy Icon of St. George, with worshippers eagerly reaching out to touch it and receive the blessing of the Great Martyr Saint George, the first among the Great Martyrs, triumphed over death through his martyrdom and forever earned the golden crown of glory.

The celebrations culminated on Friday, 25 April 2025, with Patriarch Theodore II presiding over the Matins and the Divine Liturgy, concelebrated with Metropolitan Nikolaos of Hermopolis, Metropolitan Nikodimos of Memphis and Patriarchal Vicar of Cairo, Metropolitan Savvas of Nubia, Bishop Stephanos of Hippo, and many clergy from the churches of Cairo.
