Perth: The Celebration of the Sunday of Orthodoxy and The Doxology Service for Greek National Day

On the First Sunday of Lent and with the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, His Grace Bishop Elpidios of Kyanea officiated at the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great at the Church of Saints Constantine and Helene in Northbridge, WA.

In attendance was the Consul of Greece in Perth, Mrs. Gina Karasiotou, the President of the Hellenic Community of WA, Mr. Paul Afkos and the Principal of St Andrew’s Grammar, Mr. Craig Monaghan, together with staff and students of the school.

The first Sunday of Great Lent is called the Sunday of Orthodoxy and is an important feast day in the calendar of the Church as it commemorates the restoration of the Holy Icons and the triumph of the Orthodox Faith against the heresy of the Iconoclasts (those who refused to honour the Holy Icons). Part of this celebration includes a procession of the Holy Icons.

Following the procession, the official Doxology Service took place for Greek Independence Day. This was then followed with the Wreath Laying Service at the State War Memorial Cenotaph, situated at the top of Kings Park which overlooks the city of Perth with beautiful views of the Swan River.
