Perth: Feast Day of Saint Nektarios the Wonderworker

With the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, the Feast Day of St Nektarios the Wonderworker, Bishop of Pentapolis, was celebrated with great splendour at the Archdiocesan District of Perth.

The celebrations commenced with the Hierarchical Vespers Service being conducted at the Church of St Nektarios in Dianella by His Grace Bishop Elpidios of Kyanea, Archiepiscopal Vicar of Perth. The following day, the 9th of November, His Grace Officiated at the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy in the presence of the Consul of Greece in Perth, Mrs. Georgia Karasiotou.

In his sermon, His Grace stated: “Hardships and sufferings lead us to the Kingdom of God. They humble us. They teach us to pray and forgive one another. They teach us to unite with one another and place our hope in God. Hardships and sufferings evoke tears of repentance. They encourage one to approach the sacraments. They remind us of our departure from this world and the importance of being ready. Great was the joy of St Nektarios, who throughout his earthly life suffered much for Christ, and great should be our joy when God visits us with afflictions. For hardships and sufferings brings Christ into our lives.”

At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, the icon and the saint’s relics were taken in procession outside the church. Upon return to the church, His Grace conveyed to all the love and blessings of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia. This was then followed by a luncheon in the Archdiocese Function Centre, next door to the church.
