Patriarchate of Jerusalem: The Feast Day of the Holy Great Martyr George the Trophy-Bearer

The Feast of the Holy Great Martyr George the Trophy-Bearer was celebrated in the Patriarchate:

  1. A) In the monastic Church of Saints Constantine and Helen, in the context of the Liturgy of the Monday of Bright Week, officiated by His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos of Jerusalem. After the Divine Liturgy, the congregation went to the Patriarchate Hall chanting “Christ is risen”.
  2. B) In the Holy Monastery of St. George of the Hospital in the Old City of Jerusalem opposite the Patriarchate and by transferring the commemoration to Tuesday, April 24th / May 7th.

This feast was celebrated in the evening with Vespers and the Divine Liturgy in the morning, officiated by the Archimandrite Christodoulos, under the chanting of Hierodeacons Dositheos and Simeon with the attendance of monks, nuns, and faithful from Jerusalem.

  1. C) On the morning of Wednesday, April 25 / May 8, 2024, in the Holy Monastery of Saint George in the Old City of Jerusalem in the Jewish quarter, this feast was celebrated with a Divine Liturgy, officiated by Archimandrite Philoumenos, under the chanting of the abbess nun Marianna and her helpers.

After the Divine Liturgy, Nun Marianna, who renovated the Holy Church, hosted a reception for the congregation. 

D) The memory of Saint George the Great Martyr was solemnly celebrated in the Holy Monastery of Saint George “Al Khader” of Betzalla, located in a village in Bethlehem district. In this village, the residents are not Christians, but the Patriarchate has maintained a Holy Monastery for centuries, which is visited by Christians from Bet Jala, Bethlehem and Beit Sahour.

The feast was celebrated with a Divine Liturgy on the morning of Tuesday, April 24th / May 7th, presided over by His Eminence Archbishop Theodosios of Sebastia and the Presbyter Joseph of Bet Jala, in the presence of the Consul Mrs Anna Mantikas.

The Hegoumen of the Holy Monastery, Archimandrite Porphyrios, was in charge of this celebration.

It should be noted that this feast of April 23rd is celebrated in memory of the martyrdom of Saint George in Rome, whereas the feast of November 3rd is celebrated in memory of the repatriation of his relics to Lydda.
