Patriarch of Alexandria presided over the ordination of Bishop Polykarpos of Bunia

On Sunday, 10 March 2024, His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa presided over the ordination of the Provincial Bishop Polykarpos of Bunia, Kisangani, and Eastern Congo (DRC) at the Holy Patriarchal Monastery of Saint Savvas the Sanctified of Alexandria.

The ordination was attended by Elder Metropolitans Gabriel of Leontopolis, General Patriarchal Vicar, Panteleimon of Ptolemais, Chief Secretary of the Holy Synod, Narcissus of Pelusium, Patriarchal Vicar of Alexandria, Germanos of Tamiatheus, Head of the Holy Monastery of Saint Savvas, Bishops Prodromos of Toliara and South Madagascar, Isaac of Bujumbura and Burundi, Konstantianis Kosmas and Stefanos of Hippo.

Among the attendees were the Consul General of Greece to Alexandria, Mr. Ioannis Pyrgakis, the President of the Greek Community of Alexandria, Mr. Andreas Vafiadis, Presidents of Greek institutions and associations of Constantinople, directors and teaching staff of the Greek schools, students of the Patriarchal School of Alexandria “Saint Athanasios,” the parents of the ordained Bishop, Mr. Margaritis and Ms. Eleni Diamantopoulou, and visitors from Greece.

During his homily, the Patriarch of Alexandria addressed Bishop Polykarpos of Bunia and Kisangani, acknowledging his love for the Church and the Patriarch himself. He praised Bishop Polykarpos’ dedication to spirituality, noting his transition from studies at the Polytechnic University to a life of obedience and service to God.

The Patriarch highlighted Bishop Polykarpos’ ministry in Madagascar, where he immersed himself in the local culture, learned the language, and earned the respect and friendship of the people. Despite facing risks, Bishop Polykarpos ventured into remote regions to provide aid and comfort to those in need, embodying the principles of sacrifice and compassion.
