Northcote: The Sunday of Orthodoxy at the Archdiocesan Church of Our Lady ‘Axion Esti’

The Sunday of Orthodoxy, the triumph of Orthodoxy over the iconoclasts and the restoration of the holy icons, was celebrated with due ecclesiastical splendour on 24 March 2024 at the Archdiocesan Church of Our Lady ‘Axion Esti’ in Northcote, Victoria,

His Grace Bishop Evmenios of Kerasounta, Archiepiscopal Vicar of Northcote, presided over the Divine Liturgy. At the conclusion of the Liturgy, the customary procession of the Holy Icons took place around the Church.

His Grace Bishop Evmenios, conveyed to the faithful the wishes of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, while during his sermon he focused on the procession that takes place on the Sunday of Orthodoxy. “We hold an icon not only because we love this particular Saint,” he explained, “but because we must set an example and become like the Saint.” His Grace also emphasised that the procession around the Church demonstrates that we must have the Church of Christ at the centre of our lives. “It reminds us that in everything we do, the Church and Christ should dominate”, he pointed out.
