New legislation seeks to safeguard Greek songs

More than 150 Greek composers, lyricists, singers and musicians signed an open letter on Wednesday expressing support for a Culture Ministry bill for the protection and promotion of Greek-language songs and music.

The initiative by Culture Minister Lina Mendoni, which stipulates a 45% quota for Greek songs played in public spaces, such as hotels, for example, is described in the letter as a “ray of light.”

“Greek songs, its creators and contributors have a long, wonderful journey that makes Greece proud. Greek poetry set to music is over 2,000 years old. It is not certain, however, that it can survive another day if drastic, coordinated action is not taken now for their protection,” the letter said
