Mount Athos: Panagia “Axion Esti” departs The Church of Protaton and is being taken to Komotini

The Holy Metropolis of Maroneia and Komotini received yesterday, Tuesday 6 September 2022, the Sacred and Holy Icon of Panagia “Axion Esti” from the Church of Protaton of Mount Athos.

The wonderworking and sacred Icon, which is kept on the Holy Synthronos of the historical Church of Protaton in Karyes, Mount Athos, was taken in the morning hours of Tuesday from Mount Athos, with all the Athonite and monastic honours associated with such a procession, culminating in its arrival on the same day in Komotini by the Athonite Fathers. The photos which were taken by Mr Kostas Tzivnidis are of the procession of the holy icon leaving The Protaton Church on Mount Athos.

Today, there will be an official reception in the afternoon of the Holy Icon and then with a Litany, the Icon will be taken to the Holy Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Theotokos, where the icon will be available for all the faithful to venerate.

Tomorrow, His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew will arrive in Komotini, and then preside over the Doxology and Divine Liturgy on the 8th of September, for the feast day of the Birth of the Theotokos, at the Cathedral Church.
