Meeting held to protect antiquities in islands affected by quakes

In response to the recent seismic activity in the Cyclades chain of islands, the Hellenic Culture Ministry convened a meeting last week to assess the protection of the region’s antiquities.

The session, led by Culture Minister Lina Mendoni, included experts from the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organisation and the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades.

Discussions focused on evaluating the current state of archaeological sites and museums, implementing preventive measures, and establishing rapid response protocols for potential earthquake damage.

The ministry emphasised the importance of safeguarding the rich cultural heritage of the Cyclades, known for its significant archaeological treasures, against natural disasters.

Further inspections and assessments are planned.
