Island schools reopening after earthquake swarm

Schools on the Cycladic islands of Santorini, Ios, Amorgos and Anafi will be welcoming back their students and staff on Tuesday, following a weeks-long shutdown during a major earthquake swarm that rocked this part of the Aegean Sea from late January to the middle of February.

Minor tremors are still being recorded around the islands, but experts seemed confident during a meeting last week that the phenomenon is coming to an end and life can return to normal after the long weekend break for Clean Monday.

Inspections of all public buildings on the four islands have confirmed that they stood up well to the seismic activity and can go back into operation.

Increased safety precautions are being put in place, however, and residents are advised to be especially careful about the routes they choose to get around, and about checking their homes and businesses for damage.
