Litany of the Holy Relics of Saint Spyridon in Kerkyra
Yesterday, August 11, the local church of Kerkyra (Corfu), but also our church in general, celebrates the memory of the supernatural miracle of Saint Spyridon, which happened in 1716, when Corfu was besieged by the Turks, and Saint Spyridon saved the island of Corfu by sinking the ships of the turks and the increasing of stormy seas that occurred during the siege.
In fact, one of the agarines confessed the sight of Saint Spyridon on the horizon, chasing them away and threatening them. Around 5 O’clock in the morning, a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy was held at the holy church pilgrimage of Saint Spyridon, which was presided over and officiated by His Eminence Metropolitan Ieronymos of Kalavryta and Aegialia, along with the participation of many priests, but also a multitude of people, who filled the holy pilgrimage internally and externally.
In his speech, The Metropolitan mentioned the incorruptibility of the holy relic and the grace it brings from God, so that he may have boldness before God, and having the faith of men as an ally, to interced the Triune God to save the island of Corfu. The Metropolitan thus prayed that the whole world would obtain the grace of Saint Spyridon.
At 9 o’clock, the traditional procession of the sacred relic of Saint Spyridon began according to the Kerkyreiko tradition and the grandeur it deserves, with the participation of philharmonic orchestras, of students, scouts and other associations of the island.
The head of the holy litany was Metropolitan Panteleimon of Veroia and Naoussa, and the participating Metropolitans, Timotheos of Thessaliotida, Ieronymos of Kalavryta and the local Metropolitan Nektarios of Kerkyra, Paxoi and the Diapontian Islands
In the holy litany, the local authorities also participated, The Roman Catholic Bishop of Corfu, Bishop Georgios Altouvas, members of parliament, the mayors of the island, the regional governor, deputy governor and deputy mayors, as well as the authorities of the military, educational and other institutions of Kerkyra.
In the prayers made during the procession, which took place in front of the winter palaces as usual, His Eminence Metropolitan Nektarios of Kerkyra in his address, to the holy Hierarchs and local authorities , but also to the people of God, who flooded the streets and squares of the city, spoke of the then attempted invasion of this place but also to the danger of the attempted contemporary invasions in our homeland.
As well as the loss of faith and the church, the loss of our territorial integrity, the subjugation of the holy and sacred things of our genus and people, the alteration of the language and the leveling of our education and others, which while we see this danger, according to the saying, “while our houses are burning down, we sing.”
In the end, The Metropolitan wished for many years, and for Saint Spyridon to awaken the consciences of all of us modern Greeks, so that we may revive and return to the path of faith and God’s grace.
