Greece bids farewell to veteran diplomat Petros Molyviatis

Draped in the Greek flag he served under throughout a storied career, the body of veteran diplomat and politician Petros Molyviatis arrived in Kifissia in northern Athens on Tuesday morning, as family, friends, and state dignitaries gathered to bid farewell.
Former prime minister Kostas Karamanlis delivered a eulogy honouring Molyviatis as ‘a great Greek,’ praising his diplomatic acuity. ‘He was the best teacher on foreign affairs one could imagine,’ Karamanlis said. ‘His devotion to national interests was unparalleled. He believed deeply that the only compass in public service should be the national good.’
Achilleas Karamanlis, a longtime political ally, also spoke, calling Molyviatis ‘an authentic patriot…. His loss is not just personal. It is national… He stood for duty, moderation and seriousness. History will honour him as he deserves.” Among those in attendance were President of the Hellenic Republic Konstantinos Tasoulas, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and several former prime ministers and cabinet members, reflecting Molyviatis’ towering presence in Greek public life.
Molyviatis, 96, served as foreign minister and held key roles for decades, advising top leaders during crucial moments in modern Greek history.
