Lamentations Service held at fire-ravaged Church of Panagia Paramythia in Vlach Sarai, Constantinople

Under the clear blue sky of Constantinople, the Service of the Lamentations was solemnly celebrated at noon on Great and Holy Friday, 18 April 2025, at the roofless, fire-damaged Church of Panagia Paramythia – Vlach Sarai, located in the Phanar district. This historic church served as the Patriarchal Cathedral for approximately eight years at the end of the 16th century.

The service was led by the Grand Protosyncellus Archimandrite Grigorios, and attended by members of the Church Committee, headed by its President, Archon Grand Hartophylax Mr. Panteleimon Vigas. Many faithful from both Constantinople and abroad were also present.

In a deeply moving atmosphere, the procession of the Epitaphios took place in the courtyard of the ruined church. The faithful followed the procession with reverence and emotion, participating in the sacred rites of Great and Holy Friday amidst the historical remnants of this once-glorious sanctuary.
