Greek Naval Ship “Chios” arrives in Alexandria for ceremonial event

The Greek Naval ship “Chios” recently sailed into the peaceful waters of Alexandria, a city where Hellenism has historically played a significant role in its development and cultural formation. To mark this occasion, a festive event was organised with numerous distinguished guests in attendance.

Captain Michail Tsiligakis, the Attaché of Defence of Greece in Cairo, was present and responsible for inviting institutional representatives. Among the notable attendees were His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa, who was accompanied by His Eminence Metropolitan Narcissus of Pelusium, the Patriarchal Commissioner.

The Greek Community of Alexandria was well represented by its Secretary General Nikolaos Katsimpris, Vice President Nikolaos Kopelos, and Director Georgios Boulos, along with other important community leaders.

In addition to those mentioned above, the following dignitaries were present: the Association of the Greek Navy in Alexandria Captain Mr. Konstantinos Varouxis, the Military attaché of Cyprus Colonel Konstantinos Chatzikosti, the Counsellor of the Embassy of Greece in Cairo, Mr. Athanasios Leousis, while from the Greek Community of Alexandria, the Secretary General, Mr. Nikolaos Katsimbris, was present, the Second Vice President Mr. Nikolaos Kopelos and the Director Mr. Georgios Boulos accompanied by his wife Aline. The presence of Navy captains and high-ranking officials of the Egyptian state was particularly honourable, who brightened up the reception hosted by the captain of the warship “Chios”.

From the associations of the city who were present were the President of the Hellenic Naval Club of Alexandria and “Ptolemy I” Ms. Lilika Thlivitou and the President of the Chamber of Commerce Ms. Machi Gavala as well as her husband.

Mr. Apostolos Todis and his wife Fotini attended on behalf of the Consulate General of Greece in Alexandria, while the manager of the community garage and Evangelismos Mr. George Astor accompanied by his wife Olga also attended.

It is also important to note the honorary presence of the Consul of Lebanon and the honorary Consul of Italy Mr. Mario de Pasquale and the Defense Attaché of Argentina Colonel Walter Nieto.

The captain, Mr. Sideras, welcomed everyone for their presence on the Greek Warship Ship “Chios”, while the Counsellor of the Embassy, ​​Mr. Athanasios Leousis, referred to the hospitality and strength of the Greek-Egyptian friendship that our two friendly countries have created with all the positive results, while His Beatitude, as always, moved those present by emphasising that it is a blessing to be on the ship and at the same time reminded everyone with his address, about the value of the cooperation of our states for peace, security and unity.

The cadets and the crew of the ship, men and women, danced traditional dances of Chios and Crete which they dedicated to the Patriarch who applauded for their dancing skill. Following the dancing, a rich buffet with drinks, soft drinks, food and fruit, created for everyone the stimulus for a relaxed mood, conversation and communication.

The Greek Community of Alexandria wishes the Greek Warship “Chios” calm seas, and may its voyages always be peaceful, with Greece and Egypt being the pillars of stability throughout the Mediterranean!
