Greece: Summer fruit exports register a drop this year, producers say

At drop in exports of summer fruit was recorded this year, Incofruit-Hellas said on Friday, attributed to the coronavirus pandemic and the frost that affected many producers in the spring.

Incofruit-Hellas, the Association of Greek Businesses of Export & Distribution of Fruit, Vegetables and Juices said that cherry exports since the beginning of the year reached 36,008 tons compared to 38,927 last year, a drop of 7.5%.

Exports of apricots dropped by 31.2%, with 14,202 tons this year compared to 20,657 last year, while exports in peaches dropped by a steep 65.7% this year, to 32,804 tons from 95,751 tons last year.

Grape exports remained at the same level as last year, 19,650 tons, with a marginal drop of 1.9% related to last year’s 20,029 tons. Incofruit however said it expects an improved demand with the return of people on holidays.

The fruit that registered a record in export tonnage was watermelons, which reached a total of 210,646 tons this year, from 203,085 last year, a rise of 3.7%.
