Greece faces disruptions as severe weather brings snow, rain and storms
Greece is on high alert as a new wave of severe weather brings heavy rain, storms and snowfall to several regions, leading to school closures and road disruptions, particularly in the north.
Snowfall is intense in Epirus, Macedonia, Thrace and the mountains of Thessaly, while strong winds are affecting the Aegean and Ionian seas.
Macedonia and Thrace are facing significant disruptions, with snow and heavy rainfall causing road closures and hazardous conditions. Several villages in Halkidiki have been blanketed in snow, with snowplows working tirelessly to keep roads open.
In northern Greece, schools were closed in many municipalities on Monday, and snow chains are mandatory on several roads. Severe weather also continues to impact areas in Fthiotida and Evrytania. In Athens, storms and rain caused heavy traffic, and Mount Parnitha’s road was closed due to snow.
In Kalamata in the southern Peloponnese, flooding and landslides swept away cars and boats, damaging seaside businesses. The Rion–Antirion ferry route was suspended due to strong winds.
According to the National Observatory of Athens meteo.gr, parts of Eastern Peloponnese and Central Greece saw substantial rainfall by midday Monday.
The National Meteorological Service forecasts continued rain and snow across the country Tuesday, with conditions expected to improve by the afternoon.
