Greece: Death toll from Storm Bora rises to 3

A man has been found dead on the Halkidiki peninsula in northern Greece following the passage of Storm Bora.

Local reports indicate that the man’s vehicle overturned and fell into a ditch as he tried to avoid falling rocks caused by landslides triggered by the heavy rain.

According to state broadcaster ERT, the man, whose body was discovered on Monday morning, likely succumbed to hypothermia after being trapped and unaided in his vehicle for at least eight hours.

His identity has not yet been disclosed.

This death brings the storm’s total death toll to three. Two people lost their lives over the weekend as the storm swept through the island of Lemnos (also spelled Limnos) in the northern Aegean.

Torrential rain caused significant damage in Halkidiki, particularly in Sithonia, the second leg of the peninsula. Homes, basements, and shops were flooded, roads turned into rivers, and mudslides with debris made roads impassable for drivers.

At midnight, residents in the area received an emergency alert via the 112 service, advising against travel between Porto Koufo and Neos Marmaras due to severe weather conditions and damage to the road network.
