Grandeur Celebration in Perth for the Sunday of Orthodoxy

Sunday of Orthodoxy was celebrated at the Church of Evangelismos in Perth with the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy of St Basil the Great presided by His Grace Bishop Elpidios of Kyanea.

His Grace in his sermon gave a brief historical outline of the Iconoclastic controversy that tormented the Church for one hundred years in the eighth and ninth century.

His Grace Bishop Elpidios reminded the faithful that every generation faces its own false teachings that requires from us vigilance and a defence of the faith. In addition, His Grace emphasised that beneath the spiritual confusion witnessed today lies a more serious problem; our inability to discern between good and evil, between truth and falsehood. For the words of the Prophet Isaiah (5:20), “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who call darkness light and light darkness” are so relevant today as the Western world all witnesses the Ukraine crisis.

At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, the customary icon procession took place, while the clergy offered petitions for the people, civil authorities, and those who have reposed in the faith. Finally, a reading of excerpts took place from the Affirmation of Faith of the Seventh Ecumenical Council followed by the singing of the Great Prokeimenon, “Who is so great a God as our God? You are God who alone works wonders”.
