Fiftieth Anniversary of the falling asleep of Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras

On Sunday, July 10, 2022, The Church of Constantinople honored the memory of the late Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of his death (July 7, 1972), with the celebration of the Patriarchal and Synodal Divine Liturgy, at the end of which a Trisagion service was chanted for repose of the soul of the great Patriarch.

His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, presided over the Divine Liturgy, in the venerable Patriarchal Church of Saint George, in the Phanar, which was attended by the Geron Metropolitan Emmanuek of Chalkidon, Geron Metropolitan Apostolos of Derkoi, Metropolitan Melito of Philadelphia, Metropolitan Ambrosios of Korea, Metropolitan Athenagoras of Kydonia  and Metropolitan Maximos of Silivria.

Bishops of Medea Mr. Apostolos, Mr. Beniamin of Tralleon, and Mr. Athenagoras of Patara, clergy, Nuns, Lord Officials of the M.t.X.E., faithful from the City and pilgrims from abroad.

In attendence also were their Eminences, Geron Metropolitan Dimitrios of Prikiponnisos, Metropolitan Irenaios of Myriophytos and Peristaseos, Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Myron, Metropolitan Stefanos of of Kalliopoleos and Madytos, Their Graces, Bishop Apostolos of Medea, Bishop Benjamin of Tralleis and Bishop Athenagoras of Patara, clergymen, nuns, Archons Offikialioi, faithful from Constantinople and pilgrims from abroad were also in attendance.

Afterwards, a philological Memorial was held, in the Throne Room of the Patriarchal House, during which His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew briefly referred to the character and the most important initiatives of his late predecessor, from whom he was blessed to receive the title of “Teacher of Orthodox Theology “, upon his graduation from the historic Theological School of Chalki in 1961, and later the office of Archimandrite, as well as the scholarship for his five-year higher studies in Europe.

Subsequently, the bearer of the name of the Ecumenical Patriarch, Metropolitan Athenagoras of Kydonia, following a Patriarchal and Synodal assignment, made a speech in which he referred extensively to the life and ministry of the Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras, with an emphasis on the most important aspects  of his multidimensional work, during His long Patriarchy, with which work he ministered with self-denial to the Church of Christ and the First Throne of Orthodoxy.
