Feast day of Saint Dimitrios the Myrrh-streamer & Great Martyr of Thessaloniki

On October 26, the Church venerates the memory of Dimitrios the Myrrh-streamer & Great Martyr of Thessaloniki.

The great feast day was celebrated throughout the Orthodox world in a festive and splendorous manner, with the northern Greece metropolis of Thessaloniki again being the epicenter.

Every 26 October, Thessaloniki celebrates its patron saint and protector, as well as the annual anniversary of its liberation from centuries of dour Ottoman rule, as on the day in 1912, the Greek army victoriously entered the city during the first Balkan War.

An archieratical Divine Liturgy was held in the morning at the historic Metropolitan Cathedral of St. Dimitrios, officiated by the resident Metropolitan, His All-Holiness Anthimos, and co-officiated by the representative of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, Metropolitan of Neapoli and Stavroupoli, His Eminence Varnava.

A Doxology service followed, commemorating the liberation of the city, held in the presence of Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou and local office-holders.
