Greek PM Mitsotakis congratulates new pontiff

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has offered his congratulations and well wishes to the new Pope of Rome, Leo XIV.

“Congratulations to Pope Leo XIV. Your leadership comes at a time when the world faces profound challenges but also great opportunities for unity, compassion, and dialogue among peoples and faiths,” Mitsotakis wrote in a post on X (former Twitter) late on Thursday.

The 69-year-old from Chicago stepped into his role as the 267th pope on the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica on Thursday evening, addressing thousands of cheering Catholics with the words: “Peace be with you all.”
