Epiphany celebration in Piraeus held without Archbishop of Athens due to COVID

While His Beatitude Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All greece was initially scheduled to be present at the port of Piraeus for the ritual sanctification of the waters following the Divine Liturgy of the Epiphany, he was unfortunately not able to attend this year.

The Archbishop is one of the hundreds of thousands of Greeks who have reportedly been infected with the latest variant of COVID.

Archbishop Ieronymos does not exhibit severe symptoms; nonetheless, he is required to remain confined to his home, receiving the necessary treatment.

The service of the Blessing of the Waters in Piraeus

His Eminence Metropolitan Seraphim of Piraeus presided over the Blessing of the Waters service, attended by political and military leaders. This year’s ceremony took place at Piraeus, the nation’s primary sea port.

At 11:00 in the morning, at the pier opposite the Church of Saint Spyridon in Piraeus, the Blessing of the Waters service took place while members of the Greek Navy Seals Association dived into the cold waters in order to retrieve the Holy Cross.
