Celebrating 60 Years of St George Monastery, Yellow Rock

With the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia the Holy Monastery of St George Yellow Rock has organised a series of commemorative events in celebration of the 60th anniversary.

On 4th October 1962, the founders of the Monastery, Dimitrianos and Eleni Freiderikou, purchased the Monastery grounds with the blessing of the late Archbishop Ezekiel, and since then has been a spiritual haven for Orthodox Christians around Australia. For over twenty years the current Bishop Kyriakos of Sozopolis, Archepiscopal Vicar of the District of Melbourne, served the Monastery as its first Abbot and offered spiritual guidance to a vast number of Orthodox faithful throughout NSW. In 2012, Bishop Kyriakos received the blessing from Archbishop Stylianos, of blessed memory, for the commissioning of the icon of the Virgin Mary, Panagia of Yellow Rock.

With God’s providence on July 23rd 2020, with the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, Archimandrite Ieronymos from the Holy Monastery of St John of the Mountain, WA, was charged with the responsibility of succeeding Bishop Kyriakos of Sozopolis.

Over the last two years the growing monastic Brotherhood continues to strive for the development of the Monastery with a number of future plans and projects.

This year there have been a series of fundraising initiatives in celebration of the Monastery’s 60 years. On the 30th September from 7pm there will be a Vigil for Panagia at the Monastery of St George. On 3rd October at 6pm there will be a Hierarchical Vespers for the feast of Panagia of Yellow Rock and on 4th October from 7am there will be Matins and a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy followed by a fundraising lunch to support the building works of the Monastery.

His Eminence Archbishop Makarios writes concerning St George Monastery’s anniversary event programme and states, “I wholeheartedly encourage both the clergy and the faithful of our Holy Archdiocese to embrace and support the vision of the Holy Monastery by participating in the commemorative events”.

Please consider attending the main fundraising event of the year, the Anniversary Dinner on 9th October 5pm at St Ioannis Greek Orthodox Church Hall, Parramatta.
