Archbishop of Athens: “It is imperative to stop the war and initiate negotiations for peace”

His Beatitude Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece conveyed a powerful message of peace during his recent meeting with the Secretary General of the Muslim World League, Dr. Mohammad bin Abdul Karim Al-Issa.

“It is imperative to stop the war and initiate negotiations for peace,” the Archbishop said. Addressing the urgent need to halt conflicts and initiate dialogues for peace, Archbishop Ieronymos emphasised the importance of transcending political divisions and focusing on shared ideals.

Accompanied by prominent figures from the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy (I.A.O.), including Mr. Maximos Charakopoulos and Counselor Mr. Kostas Mygdalis, the delegation engaged in constructive discussions aimed at fostering understanding and cooperation between different faith communities.

Dr. Al-Issa commended Archbishop Ieronymos for his unwavering commitment to promoting peace globally and highlighted the historical ties between Islam and Orthodoxy. Stressing the significance of mutual visits in strengthening interfaith relations, Dr. Al-Issa underscored the need to counter hatred and misconceptions with messages of unity and solidarity.

In response, Archbishop Ieronymos expressed gratitude for the opportunity to meet and reiterated the importance of putting shared values into practice. Reflecting on recent events, Archbishop Ieronymos emphasised the role of religious leaders in advocating for peace and urged for the protection of vulnerable populations, including the elderly and children, from the ravages of war.

Furthermore, Archbishop Ieronymos called for the immediate cessation of hostilities and the initiation of peaceful dialogues to resolve conflicts. Emphasising the need for practical actions to complement theological teachings, Archbishop Ieronymos stressed the importance of unity and patience in navigating turbulent times.
