Archbishop Makarios of Australia: “True love does not ask for anything in return, nor is it afraid to sacrifice”

“True love does not seek anything in return; nor is it afraid to sacrifice because it finds fulfilment when it gives itself and when it is shared” emphasises, among others, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, in his video message on the Instagram social networking site. “Do not be afraid to continue expending yourself” he urges in the same message, “because it is only in this way that you will be able to see the other the way that God sees them” And he concludes: “Move forward in establishing a relationship when you have such feelings, and only when you are ready to expend yourself. Otherwise, you risk causing suffering to others and experiencing suffering yourself.”

The following is the entire message and the relevant post made by His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia:

True love is not simply a feeling but a long-lasting choice to offer yourself without considering the cost. It is the power which unites, heals and transforms. True love does not seek anything in return; nor is it afraid to sacrifice because it finds fulfilment when it gives itself and when it is shared. Though today’s tendency encourages us to turn inward and focus on ourselves, I dare to tell you not to be afraid to continue expending yourself; because it is only in this way that you will be able to see the other the way that God sees them; as God sees each and every one of us: precious, unique and worthy of being loved. Move forward in establishing a relationship when you have such feelings, and only when you are ready to expend yourself. Otherwise, you risk causing suffering to others and experiencing suffering yourself.
