Adelaide: Cyprus Anniversary and Book and Icon Exhibition

On July 20, 2022, it will be 48 years since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

The Cyprus Community of South Australia organised commemorative events for the “black anniversary”.

On Sunday 17th of July 2022, His Grace Bishop Silouan of Sinope, representing His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, officiated at the Divine Liturgy and the Memorial Service for the repose of the souls of the victims of the barbaric invasion, in the presence of the Executive Committee of the Cyprus Community and many people of the Greek Cypriot Community in Adelaide.

In his sermon, His Grace spoke about the sacrifices of our fallen Greek and Greek-Cypriot heroes who watered the soil of Cyprus with their blood and conveyed the prayers and blessings of our Father and Shepperd, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia.

Afterwards at the headquarters of the Cyprus Community, a Trisagion Service took place in memory of our heroes and speeches were made by the presidents of the Cyprus Community and the Justice for Cyprus SA (SEKA), as well as representatives of the state government and opposition. A reception followed kindly hosted by the Cyprus Community of S.A.

In the afternoon of the same day, with the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios, His Grace went to the Greek Welfare Centre “St Philothei”, where he took part in the Agiasmos Service for the official opening of a Book and Icon exhibition, organised by the Central Philoptochos Committee.

In conveying the greeting of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios to those present, His Grace emphasised the importance of reading for our spiritual edification, and of devotional items for our daily life in Christ. His Grace paid special attention to the presence of the young children to whom he made an instructive and interpretive presentation of the Agiasmos Service. All children received a gift at the conclusion of the Agiasmos service on behalf of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios. The joy of the children was evident on their faces as they quickly filed past to venerate the Cross in child-like anticipation to receive their gift bag.
