A historical recording: Vasilios Nicolaidis and Theocharis Anestidis in Halki

During the Vespers of the Feast Day of Panagia Myrtidiotissa, at the Church of Saint Nicholas on the island of Halki of the Princes’ Islands, on 23rd September 1975, the Late Archon Protopsaltis of the Great Church of Christ, Vasilios Nicolaidis and Theocharis Anestidis, then Protopsaltis of the Church of Saint Dimitrios Tataoula, are heard during this historic recording.

This historic recording is released on CD, which is included in the edition “THEOCHARIS ST. ANESTIDES – A true Phanariot”, published by the Athens-based Musicophile Association of Constantinople, edited by Stavros Anestidis (Athens 2021, p. 246).

The characterisation given in the subtitle of the book, “a true Phanariot”, is absolutely accurate when it comes to Theocharis Anestidis. He belongs to a generation that preserved not only Romiosyni, but also its tradition, both in the Great School of the Nation, during his educational studies, and on the chanting stands of the Churches of the City of Constantinople, where he testified for decades his faith and contribution to the religious and liturgical life of the Greeks of Constantinople.
