A copy of the Holy Icon of Panagia Gorgoepikoos taken from Mt Athos to Santorini

His Eminence Metropolitan Amphilochios of Thira, Amorgos and Isles, presided over the divine services during the formal reception and enthronement of the Holy and Venerable Icon of Panagia, the one called Gorgoepikoos, at the Holy Hesychastirion of Saint George, in the village of Emporio on Santorini, which took place on Friday, 10 February 2023.

The Icon was donated by the Holy Monastery of Docheiariou on Mount Athos, following the will of the ever-remembered Elder, Archimandrite Grigorios in the Holy Monastery of Prophet Elijah in Thira, of which the women’s Hesychastirion is also a Metochion.

His Eminence Metropolitan Amphilochios, who was joined by the fathers of the Monastery and clergy of the Metropolis, welcomed the icon in the courtyard of the Monastery, he anointed her with Holy Myrrh and then presided over the Vespers service.

The Abbot of the Holy Monastery of Prophet Elijah in Thira, Archimandrite Damaskinos Gavalas briefly presented the ties which connect the Monastery of Prophet Elijah,Thira and the Docheiariou Monastery of Mount Athos, and then His Eminence, referring to the history of the original icon on Mount Athos, he emphasised that now the island of Thira possesses another spiritual treasure and a peaceful port, primarily for the nuns who struggle in this Holy Hesychastirion, as well as for all the faithful who turn to the Holy Icon of the Virgin Mary.

After a short break, a Vigil was held, with the services of the Compline, the Salutations to the Theotokos, the Matins and the Divine Liturgy.
