Five burn victims from North Macedonia in critical condition at Thessaloniki hospitals

Five young people from the Republic of North Macedonia were in critical condition at two hospitals in Thessaloniki on Monday after a fire at a nightclub in the town of Kocani on Sunday killed 59 people and injured 150.

Two young women aged 19 years and a young man aged 25 are being hospitalised in the Intensive Care Unit of the G. Papanikolaou Hospital’s burn unit. They have serious internal burns that will lead to tracheotomies, while the burns on their arms and legs are more manageable, according to information to Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA).

Two young men aged 25 are intubated and in critical state at the 424 General Military Hospital.
The five were transported to Thessaloniki late on Sunday, as Greece and other countries offered hospitalization. Deputy Interior Minister for Macedonia-Thrace Kostas Gioulekas told ANA-MPA, “We will provide any help our neighbouring country asks for.”

Earlier on Monday, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis said in a post on X that the five were transported to Greece following a request by North Macedonia. “Following the tragic accident at dawn yesterday at Kocani in North Macedonia, and following a request of our neighboring country to the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, all necessary actions have been put into effect and and coordination is in process among the Greek Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Health Ministry, the Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Ministry, and the Health Operations Center of the emergency ambulance service (EKAV) in order to transport, receive, and treat burn victims at the appropriate health facilities of our country.”
