Greece: Election of the new Parliament speaker on Wednesday

The parliament plenary will hold a vote to elect the new president of the parliament, today, Wednesday 22 January 2025, following the resignation of Konstantinos Tasoulas, who has been nominated by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for the office of President of the Republic.

New Democracy deputy Nikitas Kaklamanis is expected to be elected with a vast majority as opposition parties PASOK-Movement for Change and SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance have also expressed their support for Nikitas Kaklamanis, while the parliamentary groups of Elliniki Lysi and Spartiates, as well as the majority of independent MPs, are positive.

The New Left has decided to declare its “presence” while the same stance is expected to be taken by the communist party KKE, Niki and Plefsi Eleftherias. After the election of the new president of the body, the handover-reception ceremony will follow.
