The visit of Metropolitan of Accra to the Diocese of Benin, Togo, and Burkina Faso has concluded

With the Grace of God and the divine blessings of His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch Theodore of Alexandria and All Africa, the five-day visit of His Eminence Metropolitan Daniel of Accra to the neighbouring Holy Diocese of Benin, Togo, and Burkina Faso, and its shepherd, Bishop Athanasios, has been completed.

The purpose of this visit was to strengthen the spiritual and fraternal bonds between the Holy Clergy and Orthodox faithful of the two provinces under the Alexandrian Throne in West Africa.

Bishop Athanasios invited Metropolitan Daniel to the countries of Togo and Benin to jointly celebrate the sacred commemoration of the great Alexandrian Father, Saint Athanasius, a day that also marked Bishop Athanasios’s name day.

The jurisdictions of the two provinces (Ghana, Ivory Coast, Mali, and Benin, Togo, and Burkina Faso) are members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), sharing common values and traditions in the sub-Saharan region.

Bishop Athanasios hosted Metropolitan Daniel and his entourage, and together they toured and co-officiated services in parish churches and ecclesiastical communities in the two countries, delivering a message of unity under the aegis of the ancient Throne of Saint Mark.

During the Hierarchical Divine Liturgies, the Patriarchal Encyclical was read, proclaiming 2025 as the “Year of Saint Athanasius the Great,” with events to be organised across Africa.

In the spirit of the great missionary work of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, the two Hierarchs agreed upon and set goals to further enhance the Orthodox presence and activities in their respective provinces.
